Itinerary - One Night Bike Camping
Please contact us if you need transportation from Ottawa. It takes about 1 hr 25 min to drive.
11:00 AM We will assemble in Calabogie, a tiny village in Eastern Ontario. If driving from Ottawa, it will take you about 1 hr 25 minutes. After we share introductions, we will apply sunscreen and insect repellent as needed and go over some basic safety instructions. We will then have a picnic lunch and fill our water bottles.
1:00 PM We start the journey from Calabogie on the K&P Trail. The first part requires a short detour around Calabogie Lake because the old rail trail is now under the lake!. The trail is very flat (no hills) but rough in some places, with some large puddles. You will get wet feet! You will go at your own pace, stopping to take photos or investigate the many creeks, beaver ponds, or old bridges. You will see some abandoned homesteads, relics of the days when the railway was the only way to access this wilderness. Shortly after we pass Clyde Forks, we take a turn to the west off the K&P and climb to our isolated lake on Crown (public) land. Our support vehicle will meet us there, with all the camping and personal gear.
3:30 PM We set up the tents and prepare for a swim in the lake. As we relax in the sun after our swim, some people might want to try fishing for bass, walleye, northern pike, perch or muskellunge.
If you want to fish, you need a license. Regulations are different for Ontario residents, Canadian residents, and non-residents. Please contact us if you want help arranging the necessary Outdoors Card and fishing license tag.
5:30 PM Some people will gather wood for cooking and others might help by purifying drinking water, chopping vegetables, or preparing some back country recipes. There will be lessons on how to light a campfire, both in our portable "firebox" and in the pit found at the campsite. After eating, we will share the clean-up duties. After dinner, it's time to watch the sunset and prepare skits, songs, poems, or stories for the other campers. If the sky is clear we will see the Milky Way or maybe even the Northern Lights.

7:00 AM Most photographers know that the best light is early in the morning. You could explore the trails near our camp site or walk to the shoreline to watch the mist rising and have an early morning dip. Slowly you will smell coffee brewing and breakfast cooking. People will share stories about noises they heard during the night or possible sightings of nocturnal animals.
9:00 AM We start taking down the tents and packing away the sleeping bags. When everyone is ready, we bike back (downhill!) 3 km to the K&P Trail and then head north back to Calabogie (28 km).
11:00 This is our chance to do some single-track mountain biking. There is literally something for everyone on the trails near Calabogie. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders will all find a level of technical difficulty to match their skills. In the winter, there is an elaborate Nordic (cross country) ski network and many of the MTB trails extend off these. If you have had enough biking, you can relax at a public beach in the town. Or if you haven't had enough of the K&P, you can continue north toward Renfrew for some more flat trail riding.
12:30 PM For lunch, we will visit a local restaurant.
1:30 PM After lunch, we will discuss lessons learned and load up the bikes for the trip home. You could also go for a final swim at the beach.
